In his own fascinating language of images Birri demands a revision of the concept of ‘underdevelopment’, which is based on the idea that affluence can be attained by everyone while poverty is the result of a lack of a willingness to work, the punishment for laziness so to speak, and not the result of injustice. The southern hemisphere does not want compassion, but demands that an end be put to the structure that imposes poverty and humiliation on it.
