In contrast to most other countries in the world, it was not the US western that had the most marked influence on the image of the Indian in Germany, but a single writer from Saxony, Karl May (1842 – 1912). He is considered to be the most widely read author of novels in German. The total number of sold copies of his works has surpassed the hundred million mark. Eberwein draws closer to the "minnesinger of the German soul" in this biographical documentation.
